No Hidden School Fees: What to Ask Before Choosing a CDL Program

Trucker Thinking, CDL School, Oklahoma City

“No hidden fees” should mean more than a slogan. It should mean you can see the entire financial path before you enroll.

Ask for a written answer to every question below.

Training-cost checklist

  • What is the complete tuition?
  • Are books and online course materials included?
  • Is Entry-Level Driver Training included and reported to FMCSA?
  • How much range and road training is included?
  • Does extra practice cost more?
  • Is simulator training included?
  • Is endorsement instruction included?
  • Are the DOT physical and medical card included?
  • Is drug screening included?
  • Is the CDL Exam fee or truck rental included?
  • What happens financially if I do not pass the first time?
  • Are refunds available, and under what conditions?

Government fees are different

A school can have no hidden school fees while state or federal agencies still charge applicants.

Service Oklahoma currently lists the total first-time fee for a four-year Class A CDL at $81.50, with higher pricing for the eight-year option. Hazardous-material endorsements may involve separate federal security requirements and costs. Ask the school to separate government charges from its own charges so the total is easy to understand.

Get specific about “all endorsements”

Ask whether tuition includes the classroom instruction, the written tests, the application fees, and any separate screening required for each endorsement. Those are not always the same thing.

Superior Truck Driving Academy says its tuition covers endorsement training, the CDL S.M.A.R.T. simulator course, course materials, and instruction without surprise school add-ons. Its current program package also includes the DOT physical, medical card, and urinalysis. The state permit and credential costs remain separate.

The blunt advice is simple: do not enroll until you can explain the full cost to another person. If the numbers are still fuzzy, keep asking.
